Geez.
About fucking *time*.

Now maybe somebody whose active aim ISN'T furthering the conflict will come to power.

Abbas might be nice. I remember that he got a position, and basically gave up saying "Arafat controls everything, I can't make peace thanks to him".

if any of you follow fark.com, the headline chronology of this subject was the best:

Enters coma, not dead, still kicking, deathly ill/not deathly ill/in a coma/not in a coma/dead/not dead/brain dead/not brain dead/awake and communicating/dead, dead and should be alive in the afternoon, playing Halo 2, Schrodinger's Cat, equipment will not be switched off, opposite of whatever last update said, DEAD.

I wonder if you can figure out an exact number of how many people died as a result of his asshattery.

You gotta be kidding me...
Did you actually say that with all seriousness? Sparing Arafat any accusations of crimes against humanity because he won the nobel peace prize is like sparing Christopher Columbus accusations of slaughtering countless native americans because he discovered the "new world" and thus opened it up for the eventual US.

Sure, he has a nobel peace prize tucked somewhere. Sure, the media is having fun with covering his "legacy." Yeah, by the way, part of that legacy is embezzling millions, perhaps billions, in foreign financial aid, and putting himself in front of these people he may have "spared."

I wonder why he turned down Clinton's deal with Baraq. That would have netted Palestine a much better deal than what they have now...which is...oh yeah, a shitty place.

By the way, the nobel event was in 1993. After the Oslo Accords, Arafat did nothing to stop hamas, pflp, islamic jihad, etc. from carrying out thousands of terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians. With Arafat's encouragement and financial support, groups directly under Arafat's command, such as the Tanzim and Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, also conducted more terrorist activity in the middle east. How can you support a group called a goddam Martyrs Brigade? Does it take a lot of guessing what this "brigade" does?

I'm no big fan of Israel, and I personally may think that the best way to begin peace there beating Ariel Sharon to death with the corpse of Arafat, but god, acknowledge a terrorist when you see one.

Care for a timeline of terrorist attacks that he was associated with? (link)

I think Finalhvn covered it.
No people were spared. Quite a few people were killed.

Arafat was as responsible for terrorism in the region as good old hatred. He funded, supported, and equipped terrorists, and did *nothing* to hinder them.

The man had billions, most of them embezzled from foreign aid money. What money he didn't keep, he used on guns and bombs for terrorists--NOT on helping the Palestinian people. Furthering the conflict was very much in his best interests.

He was an asshat, no way around it.

Excuse you.

Last time I checked, it was conservatives who lined their pockets with Enron money.
